President Trump’s Controversial Travel Ban
When American President Donald Trump took office, one of his first moves was to sign an executive order stopping people from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States. Trump insisted the travel ban was necessary for national security, as protection against terrorism.
The sudden shift caught everyone outside the President’s inner circle by surprise. Without warning, travelers from the seven affected countries found themselves being turned away from the immigration points at the U.S. airports and land border crossings. The order left many individuals unable to return to their jobs, families, homes, and schools, even though they had been living, studying or working legally in America before its announcement.
The change to U.S. immigration policy sparked protests and outrage around the world. Many people inside and outside America felt shocked and upset that Trump was actually following through on his election campaign promise to stop immigration from Muslim countries. They accused the president of targeting Muslim people unfairly based on their religion and violating their human rights. Moreover, they criticized the president for signing an order that could break up families and actually lead to a rise in anti-American feeling in Muslim countries.
The legal battle over the travel ban started immediately as lawyers representing two states challenged it in district court. The judge agreed with their arguments and put the executive order on hold. Undeterred by this setback, Trump ordered government lawyers to take the matter to the next level, the Federal Circuit Court. The higher court was not convinced by the government’s arguments that the travel ban was both constitutional and necessary either. It upheld the lower court’s decision, confirming the travel ban’s suspension.
Trump was anything but impressed by the courts’ reasoning. He questioned the wisdom of the judges on social media, calling the result “a very bad decision.” He used the phrase “so-called judge” to imply that one judge was somehow not qualified to rule on the case. It was a highly unusual response for a sitting president to publically criticize the courts.
Despite his bold comments on Twitter, instead of asking the Supreme Court to review the case, Trump has ordered his staff to rewrite his original order, making exceptions for green card holders and permanent residents. More controversy can be expected with Americans divided over immigration.

    美國總統川普上任之初,最先採取的行動之一就是簽署一項行政命令,阻止來自七個穆斯林為主的國家民眾入境美國。為了國家安全,川普堅稱旅遊禁令有其必要性,這是做為對抗恐怖主義的保護措施。
    除了總統身邊的人士外,其他人都對政策的轉變大感意外。毫無預警地,來自這七個受影響國家的旅客發現他們被擋在美國機場或邊境檢查哨。這項禁令讓許多人無法返回工作崗位、與家人團聚、回家或返校,即使他們於禁令宣布前已經合法在美生活、就學或工作。
    美國移民政策的改變,在全球各地激起抗議和民怨。美國內外有許多人覺得震驚又氣惱,川普竟然真的履行競選承諾,阻止來自穆斯林國家的移民。他們控訴川普基於宗教信仰,不公平的針對穆斯林信徒,違反他們的人權。此外,他們批評川普簽署了一個可能拆散家庭的禁令,並且導致穆斯林國家的反美情緒高漲。

第一種基本句型:
S + Vi. [主詞(Subject) + 不及物動詞(Intransitive Verb)]
1. S. + Vi.
解析:在本句型中,其動詞無須補語,為完全不及物動詞,屬於動詞中最簡單的形式。在英文中,大部分的動詞可用作不及物動詞,亦可用作及物動詞。例如:fly這個動詞-Swallows fly.The child is flying a kite.

The star was shining.
The moon rose.
We all breathe, eat, and drink.

To be honest pays. (不定詞當句子的主詞)

2. There + Vi. + S.
解析:be動詞的主詞不是很確定時,用There + verb + subject的句型較好。此處there沒有確切意義,只是代替其後的主詞。
There was no money.
There have been many such incidents.
There is a stranger to see you. (There is a stranger who wants to see you.)
There is no knowing the truth. (There is no V-ing… = We cannot + Vrt… = It is impossible to + Vrt…)
There entered a five-year-old boy. (= A five-year-old boy entered.)
There won’t be enough teachers. (There is 的原式是There … to be,其他動詞或助動詞可加在There … to be中間;若是助動詞,則用There + 助動詞 + be。如:There seem to be many students.There will be no charge for the movie.

3. It + Vi. + S. (to 不定詞 / that [whether] 子句).
解析:在本句型中,主詞是不定詞或子句時,可用形式上的主詞It帶領,引導整個句子。
It matters little whether it will rain or not. (= Whether it will rain or not matters little.)
It seems that John is an intelligent boy.
It seemed that he would die soon.
It (so) happened to be a fine day. (= It happened that it was a fine day.)
It (so) happened that he was seriously ill. (= He happened to be seriously ill.)
It chanced that I was at home. (= I chanced to be at home.)
(happen to; chance to都作「恰巧」解,相當於作副詞片語的by chance; by accident)

4. S. + Vi. + Adv. / Adv. Phrase.
解析:本句型可說是第一種基本句型最簡單的形式之一,動詞之後接有副詞修飾語

We did not go anywhere last night.
He will come as soon as he is ready.
A chair will not stand on two legs.
I cannot see eye to eye with him over the matter. (see eye to eye with =意見相同)
We fought tooth and nail. (tooth and nail =盡全力地)
He speaks as if he were a Mr. Know-It-All. (as if = as though =似乎、宛如;Mr. Know-It-All =萬事通)
I feel like crying. (feel like =想要。此處like是介係詞,只能在後面接名詞或動名詞。)

5. There/Here + S.(Pron.) + Vi.! There/Here + Vi. + S.(Noun)!
解析:表示方向或位置的therehere通常置於句尾;但在感嘆句中,則應該放在句首,表示強調。其後的主詞,若是人稱代名詞(如例句15),主詞置於動詞之前;若主詞不是人稱代名詞(如例句610),則動詞應該放在主詞之前。

第二種基本句型:
S. + Vi. + C. (Complement) [主詞+不及物動詞+補語]
6. S. + Vi. + (I.O.) + C. (Adv. / Adv. Phrase).
解析:在本句型中,因為動詞是不及物,故其後所接之名詞不是當其受詞,而是表時間、重量、距離等的補語(副詞修飾語)(在表示時間及距離的副詞前,加不加for皆可)。在takecost等字之後,可用間接受詞。本句型的動詞包括所有表示「動作」、「運動」的動詞,如,go, come, fall, jump, sink, ride, walk, play等。
The work took (them) three days. (=It took them three days to finish the work.)
The speech lasted (for) an hour.

解析:在本句型中,受詞為to的不定詞(to-infinitive);表示否定時,在不定詞前加上not。用於本句型的動詞很多,例如:cease, continue, mean, learn, prefer, offer, try, expect, wish, attempt, decide, hope, dare, need等。

解析:在本句型中,受詞是there to be + N。受詞的結構可以改為「受詞(object)+不定詞(infinitive)。例如:I do not expect there to be any students in the playground. = I do not expect any students to be in the playground.

We like there to be a picnic soon.
