Scientists have recently
made a new discovery
about Earth’s tallest animal, the giraffe. Until now, scientists have believed that
giraffes belonged
to one species, with several subspecies distinguished by their different
patterns. However, after examining
the giraffes’ DNA, they’ve
recognized that there are actually four separate species.
The study showed evidence that the four species shared a common ancestor around
one
to two million years ago. However, there
is nothing to indicate
that
the species have
crossbred or exchanged
genes with each other since then. To the scientists, this is clear
evidence that the four species are distinct from each
other.
Conservation was the study’s initial goal. Scientists wanted to understand how the
different subspecies
of giraffe
might be affected if they were
mixed together in protected animal reservations. This discovery shows that each species of giraffe may require different methods of conservation,
because each species may require
totally different environments
and diets than the others.
Giraffe populations have declined 40% since 2001, with only an estimated 90,000 giraffes left in the wild. While giraffes as a whole are not included on the endangered species list, the discovery may prove that each species
is progressing in a different
way.
Therefore, the scientists’
next
project is to study what each species needs to survive, and
how
to effectively protect each
species.
32. What would

(A) That the four giraffe species may need different
conservation approaches.
(B) That the four
giraffe species developed from a common ancestor.
(C) That female
giraffes have only bred with their own species.
(D) That mixing the giraffes in protected
areas shouldn’t cause problems.

Thailand completed construction on the MahaNakhon, the country’s tallest building, and opened it to the public in August 2016. However, if you look at the MahaNakhon,
which
is in central Bangkok, you could be forgiven for thinking that the building wasn’t
finished at all. A ribbon of open space winds its way around the sides of the building from
top to bottom, giving the impression
that the builders have not yet put in all
of the exterior walls.
In fact, this is part of the MahaNakhon’s design. The open spaces are not truly open, but
have been built with glass walls, which provide magnificent views of the city. The glass walls are spaced out, which makes the MahaNakhon’s ribbon of open spaces look a little
like
the pixels on an old-fashioned computer
screen. The designer, German architect
Ole Scheeren, says this stops the huge tower from dominating Bangkok’s skyline.
Scheeren, who lived in
Thailand in the 1990s, says that Bangkok is a mixture of old traditions
and modern ideas, which inspired
him to come up with the MahaNakon’s design. He has won a number
of design awards for this project.
The building itself
is
314.2 meters high, and has 77 floors. It is home
to
restaurants, high-end stores, a hotel, and some of Bangkok’s most expensive
apartments. There is also
an
outdoor square than connects the MahaNakhon with the closest subway station. It’s
certain to catch the attention
of every visitor to Thailand’s
capital for decades to come.
37. What is the main purpose of this article?

(B) To talk about
a new and unusual building in Bangkok.
(C) To talk about
the tallest buildings in Southeast Asia.
(D) To talk about
the work of the architect Ole Scheeren.
38. What is said about the MahaNahkon’s design?
(A) It looks
like many other skyscrapers in Thailand.
(B) There are
many ribbons that hang from the walls.
(C) One side of
the building was built with glass walls.
(D) There are
open spaces on all sides of the structure.
39. According to the article, Ole Scheeren
.
(A) has lived in Thailand since the 1990s (B) received numerous awards for
his work
(C) was
inspired by a building from Germany (D)
has not completed designing the building
40. What is implied
about Thai culture in the article?
(A) It strikes
a balance between the old and
the new. (B) It is focused on making things bigger and better.
(C) It sticks
to many of its outdated traditions. (D)
It is heavily influenced by German
design ideas.
