Book 3 Unit 3 Sentence Pattern

Unit 3
1. S + V... + in order to/so as to + V....
說明 1 此句型用來表示「為了……」之意,後面接表「目的」的原形動詞片語,否定形式為in order not toso as not to
           2 in order to可以置於句首或句中,so as to則只能置於句中。
例句 1. In order to show respect for these ghosts, people call them “good brothers.”
              (為了對表示這些鬼魂表示尊重,人們稱他們為「好兄弟」。)
           2. Regan studies very hard in order to/so as to become a doctor.
              (為了成為一名醫生,Regan非常認真唸書。)
           3. Teresa turned down the music in order not to/so as not to wake her sister up.
              (為了不吵醒她的姐姐,Teresa把音樂轉小聲了。)

2. such (+ a/an) + Adj + N + that + S + V...
說明 such後面接可數名詞或不可數名詞,之後再接that子句。such修飾的名詞表示「原因」,而that引導的子句則表示「結果」,表示「如此……以至於……」之意。
例句 1. The Ghost Festival is such an important occasion that families and businesses in Taiwan often make offerings of food to “good brothers.”

鬼月是如此重要的時刻,以至於在臺灣的家庭及各行各業常供奉祭品給「好兄弟」們。)

3....N + who/whom/which/that....
說明 1 此句型為關係子句的限定用法,關係代名詞whowhomwhichthat引導的句子對先行詞有限定及修飾的作用。
    2 先行詞為人時,關係代名詞可用whowhomthat;先行詞為物時,關代可用whichthat;若先行詞包含人和物,則關代只能用that
3 關代在關係子句中作主格時,不可省略關代;但當關代在關係子句中作受格時,則可以省略。
4 限定用法的關係子句與先行詞之間不可加逗點。
例句 1. Some families even set extra seats at tables for relatives who had recently passed away.  (有些家庭甚至會在餐桌設置額外的座位給最近過世的親戚。)
           2. The magazine that Jessica wanted to buy had sold out.
               (Jessica想要買的雜誌賣光了。)

4. lt + be + believed (+ that) + S + V....                                                     
說明 1 此句型作「據信……」解,用以表示推論或普遍的看法。it在句中為虛主詞,代替後面的真主詞that子句,that在此可省略。
           2 此句型也將that子句中的主詞移至句首,而子句中的動詞則改為不定詞(to V),句型寫成“S + be + believed + to V....”
例句 1. In Chinese culture, it is believed that the gates of hell are opened on the first day of Ghost Month.
              → In Chinese culture, the gates of hell are believed to be opened on the first day of Ghost Month. (中國文化中,據信地府的門會在鬼月的第一天開啟。)
           2. It is believed that Typhoon Morokot was the result of global warming.
Typhoon Morokot is believed to be the result of global warming.
                  (據信莫拉克颱風是全球暖化的影響。)
           3. It is believed that the church was built five hundred years ago.
