高二Reading Comprehension for Weekdays on Aug 31 ~ Sep. 4, 2015

There are three things in life of great value: Health, Wealth and Wisdom. Each of them is desired, but any one of them on their own can be worthless in the long run, except for wisdom.
Health is priceless. Being able to live a full, productive life free of any disabilities or sickness is true happiness. In today’s world full of health clubs, gyms and spas, being healthy and staying in good shape has become almost a religion for some people. Hundreds of billions of dollars are spent on exercise, diets and health care every year. As health care costs rise and if one is or becomes unhealthy, then health will become harder and harder to be maintained into one’s old age. In youth, one may unwittingly take risks or chances, such as taking drugs or racing cars, which may harm them or ruin their health for the rest of their lives. It is possible for such an injured person to still lead a successful career, but not without immense expense and difficulty along the way.
Wealth is also a universal goal. Our consumer culture breaks everything down into prices, and judges people by what they can afford to buy. The rich, with the approval of this culture, also consider themselves better than their poorer fellow men. They display their money and their expensive possessions, buying clothes, jewelry and cars which the common man couldn’t even dream of purchasing. People with money, especially when it is acquired through little effort on their part, tend to value it less. Those who inherit it from their relatives or win it by lottery and spend it freely and quickly will soon end up in misery.
Both health and wealth can be easily wasted away without wisdom. Wisdom can give one the perspective to pursue and maintain one’s health — to avoid reckless activities and harmful habits. As for wealth, if one is wise, money will not be spent on superficial possessions or unwise investments. Rather, the wise man will attempt to benefit both himself and others, through profitable, long term investments and donations to charity. He will enjoy the feeling of helping others and care less about personal vanity or material status. Even without health or wealth, a wise man can still be content by both knowing and valuing himself, and by caring for and helping others. Truly, wisdom is the greatest blessing of all.

Hans Christian Andersen, Danish writer, is one of the world’s best known and most translated authors whose stories have inspired plays, ballets, films, and works of sculpture and painting. He is mainly known for the fairy tales he wrote combining folk legends and his own imagination. Andersen’s fairy tales were not meant merely for children but for adults as well. He has also written plays, novels and travelogues. His rise from ambitious shoemaker’s son to adored, internationally renowned author was difficult. Being from a poor family, Andersen received little early education. As a child he was highly emotional, suffering humiliation because of his tallness and unattractive appearance.
Before achieving success as a playwright and novelist, Andersen tried to earn his living by acting, singing and dancing, but his career on stage was unsuccessful. His gift to create magical fairy tales, written in a new, original style, however, was soon recognized. His sense of fantasy, power of description, and acute sensitivity contributed to his writing skills. Among his many widely beloved stories are “The Little Match Girl,” “The Ugly Duckling,” “The Snow Queen,” “The Little Mermaid,” and “The Red Shoes.” Some of Andersen’s tales reveal an optimistic belief in the triumph of the good, some end unhappily, but most of them depict characters who gain happiness in life after suffering and conflicts.
Andersen also wrote numerous travel diaries, because he traveled a lot in Europe and outside of it. However, his fame today rests on his fairy tales and stories, written between 1835 and 1872.

A type of person who is common in every country is the one who always tries to do as little as he can and to get as much as possible in return. His opposite, the man who is in the habit of doing more than is necessary, is rare everywhere.
The man who avoids effort is always talking about his “rights”: he appears to think that society owes him a pleasant, easy life. The man who is always doing more than his share talks of “duties”: he feels that the individual is in debt to society, and not society to the individual.
The man who likes an easy life is full of excuses: if he has neglected to do something, it was because he had a headache, or the weather was too hot ... or too cold ... or because he was prevented by bad luck. At first, other people accept his stories. But soon they realize what kind of person he is. In the long run, he deceives only himself. 高一Reading Comprehension for Weekday on Aug. 31 ~ Sep. 4, 2015

A smile and handshake will go a long way in Mexico, but a gentleman should never ever try to kiss a woman he doesn’t know well, either on the face or on the hand. While it seems that everyone is embracing, kissing is only for those with long-standing friendship. In this country, your host will expect you to be 15 to 30 minutes late for lunch or dinner; women invited on their own are never expected to arrive on time. Chivalry is very much alive, and men open doors of cars for women. They are expected to stand when a woman enters a room and to give up their seat on buses and on the subway. It is generally considered in poor taste to wear shorts on city streets and women to wear trousers to any social gathering. If you should be invited to spend the weekend at a Mexican’s home, sending flowers to the hostess is considered preferable to arriving with a present. (host:男主人 hostess:女主人 chivalry:騎士精神)

America’s great old form of entertainment was vaudeville. Long before radio, television, or movies, in the late nineteenth century, vaudeville theaters became popular. On their stages, audiences would see shows featuring singers, dancers, comedians, trained animals, mimics, and magicians. Each performer would entertain the crowd for a few minutes, followed immediately by the next performer. The show was carefully planned to give variety in fact, an early name for vaudeville theaters was “variety houses.”
Soon every city of middle or large size, and even some small towns, had a vaudeville theater. Vaudevillians, as the performers were called, were the most prominent stars of the day. 高一Reading Comprehension for Weekends Sep. 5 & 6, 2015

Many animals use some kind of language. They use signals which have meanings. For example, when a bee(蜜蜂) has found some food, it goes back to its home. It is impossible for a bee to tell the other bees where the food is by speaking to them, but it can do a little dancing. This tells the bees where the food is and how far away it is.
Some animals show how they feel by making sounds. It is not difficult to tell if a dog is angry because it barks. Birds make several different sounds and each has its own meaning. Sometimes we humans make sounds in the same way. We make sounds like “Oh!” or “Ouch!” to show how we feel about something or when we drop something on our feet!
But we have something that no animal has: a large number of words which have the meaning of things, action, feelings or ideas. We are able to give each other information, to tell other people what is in our mind, or how we feel. By writing down words, we can remember what has happened or send messages to people far away. It is impossible for animals to do this. Some birds, like the parrot, can be taught to say words, but they do not know what they mean. They cannot use the words.

The first high-heeled shoes were designed for King Louis XIV of France. The king was embarrassed that he was very short. He was so upset that he ordered a pair of high-heeled shoes made for him.
