IV. Grammar
1  感官類連綴動詞: S + look/smell/sound/taste/feel + Adj/like + N
感官動詞為和身體知覺有關的動詞,以上列出的動詞依序為「看起來」、「聞起來」、「聽起來」、「嚐起來」、「感覺起來」之意,其後可加上形容詞或先接上介系詞like後再加名詞。
例:My friend’s new sweater looks like a mung bean cake.
我朋友的新毛衣看起來像塊綠豆糕。
Your idea sounds great.
你的想法聽起來很棒。
The chocolate tastes bitter.
這巧克力嚐起來很苦。

從屬連接詞:after, before, when, while, because, although
從屬連接詞的功能為連接兩個子句。在句子中,由從屬連接詞引導的子句稱為「副詞子句」,另一半的子句則稱為「主要子句」。若副詞子句放在前半句時,須加上逗號。而常見的從屬連接詞可依其字義粗略分為三類:時間相關的afterbeforewhenwhile;原因相關的because;及讓步含意的although。其中要特別注意的是,中文常會說「因為……,所以……。」,但英文中becauseso不可出現在同一句子中;另外,中文也常有「雖然……,但是……。」的說法,不過在英文中,althoughbut亦不會出現在同一句子裡。
例:Before Maria entered the room, she took off her shoes.
Maria進來房間前,脫掉了她的鞋子。
Because Jacky is not tall, he cannot join the basketball team.
因為Jacky不高,所以他無法加入籃球隊。
Catherine went jogging although it was raining heavily.
雖然下著大雨,Catherine還是去慢跑。

one…the other…
此用法用於說明「僅有兩個」的名詞時,意為「一個……另一個……」。其中「另一個」用the other而非another的原因,在於the為定冠詞,具有限定範圍的功用,意即此用法談論的名詞是限定在一個範圍內的。
例:Kevin has two coats. One is deep green, and the other is deep blue.
Kevin有兩件大衣。一件是深綠色,另一件是深藍色。
Mrs. Yang has two sons. One is a dentist, and the other is an actor.
楊太太有兩個兒子。一位是牙醫,另一位是演員。

S + help (+ O) (+ to) + V/with + N
動詞help意為「幫助,幫忙」,其後可加受詞,意為「幫助……」。除此之外,help後方若欲加上動詞時,必須以to V的形式加上去,其中to可省略,直接以原形動詞加在help後方。而若help後方欲加上名詞時,則會先加介系詞with後,再接上名詞。
例:Ben helped his mother (to) clean the table before dinner.
Ben在晚餐前幫他媽媽整理桌子。
Zoe helped her brother with his homework.
Zoe幫她弟弟的功課。

S + would V
此句型可用來表示習慣或反覆發生的事情、動作等,有「總會、老是」的意思,常與oftenalways等搭配使用。除此之外,would為情態助動詞,後方須加上原形動詞。
例:When it comes to cherry blossom, people would always think of Japan.
一說到櫻花,人們總會想到日本。
My father would go to the temples during Lunar New Year holidays.
我爸爸在農曆新年假期中會去走訪廟宇。
