The Saisiyat people, whose name means “true people,” are the aboriginal people in Taiwan. They live in the mountains of Western Taiwan and hold an interesting festival which is called the “Dwarf Spirit Ceremony” in honor of pygmy (矮小的) spirits, the Ta’ai.
According to Saisiyat legend, the Ta’ai were powerful pygmies who were short and strong. They also had magical powers. They were able to control the weather and keep the mice from eating the crops (作物). In addition, they were good at singing and dancing. Therefore, they were always invited to the Saisiyat’s harvest festivals. However, these pygmies started to bother the women of the Saisiyat tribe, and it made some of the Saisiyat people very angry. As a result, they decided to get revenge (報復) on the Ta’ai.
On a cliff (峭壁) stood a big tree, where the pygmies liked to take a rest. The Saisiyat men then cut most of the tree roots and used mud to hide what they had done. When the Ta’ai climbed up the tree the next day, it broke and most of the pygmies fell to their death.
The rest of the Ta’ai were very angry, so they put a curse (詛咒) on the Saisiyat tribe. Then, in the years that followed, the Saisiyat people faced poor harvest and many other disasters. To solve these problems, the tribe tried to make pygmy spirits happy again by holding a festival in which they sing and dance to the songs of the Ta’ai. It is how the Dwarf Spirit Ceremony began.
