2.8  Harvest Time

1. S + see/watch/hear/listen to + O + V/V-ing
 
說明1. 此句型中所列的動詞皆為「感官動詞」,若受詞為主動動作者,其後須接原形動詞或現在分詞作為受詞補語。接原形動詞時,強調的是「動作的完整過程」;而接現在分詞時,則強調「動作正在進行」。

2. 若受詞為接受動作者,即被動語態,則後面的動詞須以過去分詞表示。

例句

1. Lucy watched her friend preparing traditional dishes on Thanksgiving.
(
在感恩節當天,Lucy看著她朋友準備傳統菜餚。)

2. I heard the rain fall on the roof last night. (我昨晚聽到雨落在屋頂的聲音。)

3. Elsa saw Jack punished by his father. (Elsa看到Jack被他爸爸懲罰。)

 

2. S + V1..., and + S + V2.... S + V1..., V2-ing....

說明:此句型為省略對等連接詞and和其後子句主詞而形成的「分詞構句」,用來表達「附帶動作」或「兩個動作發生的順序」。注意這樣的省略只能在 and 所連接的兩個子句的主詞相同時才能成立。除了省略 and 及其後子句的主詞外,還需將該子句的主動動詞改為現在分詞。

例句

1. Lucy got in a taxi, and she asked the driver to take her to the train station.

→Lucy got in a taxi, asking the driver to take her to the train station.
(Lucy
坐進計程車,並要司機載她去火車站。)

2. My sister sat on the sofa, and she was reading the novel. →My sister sat on the sofa, reading the novel.

 (我妹妹坐在沙發上,讀著小說。)

3. Every day, Laura’s uncle feeds the cows, and he sings for them.

→Every day, Laura’s uncle feeds the cows, singing for them. (Laura的叔叔每天餵牛,並唱歌給牛聽。)

 

3. provide sb with sth provide sth for sb  提供某人……

說明1. 此句型為動詞provide搭配介系詞with的用法,provide先接「人」當受詞時,須搭配介系詞with,並於其後接所提供的「事物」。

2. 動詞provide後面亦可先接「事物」,但此時介系詞須用 for ,之後再接事物的接受者,因此形成“provide sth for sb”的句構。

例句

1. The Pilgrim Fathers needed a good harvest to provide them with enough food for the first winter.

→The Pilgrim Fathers needed a good harvest to provide enough food for them for the first winter.
(
清教徒移民需要一次豐收來提供他們足夠的食物,以渡過第一個冬天。)

2. We can provide the poor with blankets in the cold winter.
→ We can provide blankets for the poor in the cold winter. (
我們可以在寒冷的冬天提供窮困的人毛毯。)

3. The hostess provided the guests with food and drinks.
→ The hostess provided food and drinks for the guests. (
女主人提供食物和飲料給這些客人。)

 

4. be filled with            充滿……

說明be filled with表示「充滿……,佔滿……」。be filled withbe full of雖然都有「充滿」的意思,但兩者在用法上有些微的差別:

1. be filled with用在「充滿了整個空間,沒有留下任何可以使用的空間」或「某空間內充滿了某種聲音或味道」時。

2. be full of用來表示「到處都是……」,純粹形容數量上的龐大,可等同於a lot of的意思。

例句

1. During Holi, the streets in New Delhi are filled with crowds of people.
(
在荷麗節時,新德里的街上被人群擠得水洩不通。)

2. The kitchen was filled with the smell of fried chicken. (炸雞的香味充滿了整個廚房。)

3. On weekends, department stores are always full of people. (每到週末假日,百貨公司總是擠滿了人。)

 

5. S + be + being + Vpp

說明:此句型表達的是「進行式的被動語態」,可分為現在被動進行式“S + is/are + being + Vpp”以及過去被動進行式“S + was/were + being + Vpp”兩種,也就是將進行式與被動語態結合在一起所形成的句型。此句型用來表示在現在或過去的時間裡,正在進行的動作。

例句

1. When Lucy went to St. Andrews in Scotland on August 1st, a Lammas Day celebration was being held.
(Lucy
八月一日那天去到蘇格蘭的聖安德魯斯時,當地正在慶祝收穫節。)

2. Last Tuesday, all the rooms were still being painted. (上週二所有的房間都還在重新粉刷中。)

3. After thirty minutes, the bathroom is still being occupied. (三十分鐘過後,浴室仍然有人在使用。)

2.7  It's Well Made in Taiwan

 

1. ...the + Adj-est (+ N)...

說明1. 形容詞最高級用於「三者或三者以上」的比較,有「最……的」的意思。

2. 形容詞最高級前面須加上定冠詞the

3. 單音節或部分多音節的形容詞字尾加上-est 以形成最高級;而其他多音節的形容詞則在前面加上most以形成最高級。

例句

1. Taiwan produces some of the finest saxophones and bicycles in the world.
(
台灣製造了部份全世界最好的薩克斯風和腳踏車。)

2. Richard is the most popular (student) in our class. (Richard是我們班最受歡迎的學生。)
3. Taipei 101 is the tallest building in Taiwan.
 (臺北101是臺灣最高的建築物。)

 

2. ...N, who/whom/which...,

說明:非限定用法的關係子句用來說明對象很明確的先行詞,前面須有逗點隔開,且關係子句省略後主句的意義仍然完整。注意,此句型中的關係代名詞不可省略,且關係代名詞that不適用於此句型。

例句

1. Zhang shared his knowledge with other Houli residents, who then opened their own saxophone factories.
(
張連昌與其他后里居民分享他的知識,這些居民之後便開設了自己的薩克斯風工廠。)

2. Jane, whom Mark falls in love with, is very tall. (Jane,就是Mark愛上的那個女孩,她非常的高。)

3. The Italian restaurant, which offers high-quality food, is very expensive.

(那間提供高檔食物的義大利餐廳價格非常昂貴。)

 

3. nothing/little more than + N                  不過是……
nothing less than/short of + N              
簡直是……

說明:此兩片語為比較級的用法,後面須接名詞,均帶有強調的意味:

1. nothing/little more than = nothing but = only,表示「不過是……,只是……」。

2. nothing less thannothing short of 則為「簡直是……,無異於……」的意思。

例句

1. In the past, people believed that Taiwan was nothing/little more than a small island in the Pacific Ocean.
(
在過去,人們認為臺灣只不過是太平洋中的一個小島。)

2. Be careful! That man who is trying to make you buy things is nothing/little more than a liar! (小心!那個試著要你買東西的男人不過是個騙子!)

3. This project was nothing less than a disaster. It had made our company lose about five million dollars.
(
這個企劃案簡直就是個災難。它讓我們公司損失了大約五百萬。)

 

4. V-ing/Vpp + N

說明:此句型介紹現在分詞與過去分詞作形容詞,以修飾後面名詞的用法。現在分詞和其修飾的名詞關係為主動,或表示「正在進行」的動作;而過去分詞和其修飾的名詞關係則為被動,或表示「已完成」的動作。

例句

1. Zhang Lian-chang received a damaged saxophone and repaired it.
(
張連昌收到一個損毀的薩克斯風,並將它修復。)

2. The stolen car was found by the police. (失竊的車子已經被警方找到了。)

3. Keep the boiling water out of children’s reach. (不要讓小孩子碰到沸騰中的水。)

 

5. S + be + said + to V....
→ It + is/was + said (+ that) + S + V....

說明1. 此句型用來表示「不是很精確的推論或看法」,作「據說……」解。由於述說或主張該言論的主事者不清楚,或是主事者不重要,故使用被動語態。常用於此句型的字還有believeconsider,分別表示「一般相信……」和「被認為……」。

2. 此句型也可改成以虛主詞it代替原本的主詞,並以that引導子句,但that常可省略。

例句

1. Giant is said to be the most stolen brand of bicycle in Shanghai, China.
It is said (that) Giant is the most stolen brand of bicycle in Shanghai, China.

  (據說捷安特是中國上海失竊率最高的腳踏車品牌。)

2. Friday the 13th is believed to be an unlucky day.
It is believed (that) Friday the 13th is an unlucky day.

  (一般相信十三號星期五是一個不吉祥的日子。)

3. Halloween was considered to be a serious festival in the past.
It was considered (that) Halloween was a serious festival in the past.

  (萬聖節在過去被認為是一個嚴肅的節日。)
