V. 閱讀測驗 (10分,每題2分)
When people go for a drive, they always
put on seat belts for safety. Do you know who invented this life-saving seat
belt?
At first, cars did not have seat belts,
and deaths from car accidents became a serious problem. Therefore, many doctors
in the 1930s suggested car makers put seat belts in all of their cars. In the
1950s, some American car makers started to offer airplane-style seat belts, or
two-point seat belts, in some of their cars. However, two-point seat belts
could not stop people’s heads from hitting the car front window in an accident.
In 1959, Nils Bohlin invented the
three-point “shoulder” seat belt, and it was soon seen to be safer and more
comfortable than the two-point seat belt. The three-point seat belt was so good
for saving people’s lives. So, in 1968, the U.S. government (政府) asked that
all the cars that were sold in the United States had to have three-point
seat belts.
Nils Bohlin’s seat belt became such an
important and common thing in people’s lives. Thus, his name was put into the
National Inventors Hall of Fame (名人堂) in 2002.
