Part III. Reading Comprehension (20%)

People would not be able to see without their eyes, hear without their ears, smell without their noses, or taste without their mouths. More importantly, without the skin, which covers the entire body, they would be deprived of not only their largest organ but also their sense of touch.

The skin allows people to feel pain, pressure, and temperature, and it also tells them if something is rough or smooth, soft or hard, or wet or dry. Moreover, it keeps people from danger and from doing serious damage to their bodies. For example, as soon as a person touches a pan, the skin can tell that it's hot and direct him or her to pull back instead of continuing to touch it and getting burned.

Touch is the sense that first develops when babies are in the womb. Without it, their chances of survival are greatly at risk. Studies have shown that once born, babies that lack being touched or held can get sick and even die. In addition, the brains of babies rarely touched are much smaller than those who receive lots of hugs and affection, which leads scientists to believe that they may have behavioral problems as they grow up. There's no denying that the sense of touch is important to how people develop and die.

(D) It leads to behavioral issues.

(   ) 23. What is NOT a function of the skin?

(A) It keeps people safe.

(B) It senses heat and pressure.

(C) It informs people when they're hurt.

(D) It prevents people from being burned.

(   ) 24. Which statement would the author most likely agree with?

(A) Vision and hearing are more important than the sense of touch.

(B) One's sense of smell and taste should never be taken for granted.
