1 The elderly lady asked Joe how much she owed him. He, however, never thought twice about helping others. He certainly never thought about any kind of payment or reward. To him, this wasn’t a job, but rather a way to help someone in need, just like those who had given him a hand in the past. He told the elderly lady that if she really wanted to repay him, she could help someone else that was in need.

2 In many languages, certain animals have specific characteristics. In Chinese, for example, dogs represent loyalty, and lions are the symbol of authority. Likewise, animal imagery can be found in many English expressions, and it has given color to this language.

3 The pronunciation of the word for “pineapple” in Taiwanese means “prosperity or good luck will come.” Naturally, it has become a symbol of wealth in Chinese culture. Thus, it is common to find pineapples placed in houses during Chinese New Year. Baozi is another instance. The word “baozi,” together with the word “zongzi,” sounds like “a sure victory.” As a result, many Chinese give those who are going to take an exam baozi and zongzi as gifts.
