Madame
Butterfly
is a classic opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini. It tells the story of

Butterfly. It takes place in Japan in early 1900s.
The
first act sees Pinkerton renting a house in the port city of Nagasaki. As he is
looking over the property, he reveals to his friend, Consul Sharpless, that he
purchased a bride for one hundred yen but plans on leaving her for a
"real" American wife. Unaware of this, Butterfly happily converts to
her future husband's religion as she prepares to become a part of his life. In
Act II, Butterfly, who had given birth to their son, waits for Pinkerton to
return after he left shortly following their marriage three years ago. She
lives alone and refuses to remarry, even to Prince Yamadori, because deep down
she believes that her husband will come back to her. With a letter from
Pinkerton in hand, Sharpless tries to convince her otherwise, but she'll hear
none of it, for she knows he won't
abandon his son. In the final act, Pinkerton arrives at Butterfly's house with

Part III. Reading Comprehension (20%)
People
would not be able to see without their eyes, hear without their ears, smell
without their noses, or taste without their mouths. More importantly, without
the skin, which covers the entire body, they would be deprived of not only
their largest organ but also their sense of touch.
The
skin allows people to feel pain, pressure, and temperature, and it also tells
them if something is rough or smooth, soft or hard, or wet or dry. Moreover, it
keeps people from danger and from doing serious damage to their bodies. For
example, as soon as a person touches a pan, the skin can tell that it's hot and
direct him or her to pull back instead of continuing to touch it and getting
burned.
Touch
is the sense that first develops when babies are in the womb. Without it, their
chances of survival are greatly at risk. Studies have shown that once born,
babies that lack being touched or held can get sick and even die. In addition,
the brains of babies rarely touched are much smaller than those who receive
lots of hugs and affection, which leads scientists to believe that they may
have behavioral problems as they grow up. There's no denying that the sense of
touch is important to how people develop and die.
( ) 21. What is the passage mainly about?
(A)
The body's biggest organ
(B)
What the body does when it senses danger
(C)
All five senses of the human body
(D)
How humans develop their sense of touch
( ) 22. According to scientific studies, which
is true about touching babies?
(A)
It reduces their chances of surviving.
(B)
It results in them having larger brains.
(C)
It causes them to get sick and die.
(D)
It leads to behavioral issues.
( ) 23. What is NOT a function of the skin?
(A)
It keeps people safe.
(B)
It senses heat and pressure.
(C)
It informs people when they're hurt.
(D)
It prevents people from being burned.
( ) 24. Which statement would the author most
likely agree with?
(A) Vision and hearing are more
important than the sense of touch.
(B) One's sense of smell and
taste should never be taken for granted.
(C) A person's sense of touch is
important to his or her development.
(D) Unlike the four other sense
organs, the one for touch is located in just one place.
