U1 U5 Sentence Pattern Practice


UNIT 5
1. To V1/V1-ing... (+ Aux) + be/V2....
說明 1不定詞或動名詞片語皆可當句子的主詞,視為第三人稱單數,須接單數動詞。
2作主詞時,若不定詞片語過長,常會以虛主詞it替代,並將真主詞置於句子的後半部,避免整個句子頭重腳輕。其句型為“It (+ Aux) + be/ V2... to V1.... ”
例句 1. To Juan Mann, arriving/to arrive at an airport alone was very depressing.
(
Juan Mann來說,一個人孤零零地抵達機場非常令人沮喪。)
2. To say/Saying is one thing, but to do/doing is another.
(
說是一回事,做又是另一回事。)
3. To give a speech in public makes Brian nervous.
It makes Brian nervous to give a speech in public.
(
公開演講讓Brian覺得緊張。)
練習 1. 為家人煮晚餐帶給Jackson太太喜悅。
 Making/Cooking/Fixing  dinner for her family  brings/brought  Mrs. Jackson joy.
2. 跑馬拉松需要堅強的毅力。
 To   run  a marathon takes a strong will.

2. S1 + suggest + that + S2 + (should) V....
說明 1此句型表示「建議某人應該做某事」之意。動詞suggest後接that所引導的名詞子句當受詞,而子句中的助動詞should常被省略,所以不論何種時態或人稱,其後動詞均可用原形。
2如要表達否定,則把not加在子句中原形動詞前即可。
3其他類似用法的動詞尚有:recommend (推薦)advise (勸告)demand (要求)order (命令)insist (堅持)require (需要)等。
例句 1. Juan Mann suggested that he and the lady (should) share a hug.
(Juan Mann
建議婦人和他擁抱一下。)
2. Elsa's stylist suggests that she (should) try a new hairstyle.
(Elsa
的髮型設計師建議她嘗試新髮型。)
3. The waiter recommended that we (should) order roast beef.
(
服務生推薦我們點烤牛肉。)
練習 1. Claire建議她父親應該戒菸。

 suggests/suggested   that  her father  should  quit smoking.
2. Ryan堅持要我參加他的生日派對。
Ryan
 insists/insisted   that  I  join/attend  his birthday party.

3. make + O + V....
說明 make為使役動詞,表示「使……做某事,讓……做某事」之意。若受詞為主動發出動作者,其後須接原形動詞。
例句 1. Arriving at the airport alone made Mann feel lonely and depressed.
(
孤零零地抵達機場使Mann感到既寂寞又沮喪。)
2. The clown's funny tricks are making the children laugh.
(小丑滑稽的把戲讓小孩們哈哈笑。)
3. My mother made me finish my homework before dinner.
(
媽媽要我在晚餐前做完功課。)
練習 1. John的父母要他吃飯前先洗手。
John's parents
 made   him   wash  hands before he ate.

2. 這部悲傷的電影讓Sandy哭了。
The sad movie
 made  Sandy  cry .

4. to one's + N  令人感到……的是
說明 此副詞片語多置於句首,表達人的心情,須搭配關於情緒、感情方面的名詞。常見的情緒名詞有surprise (驚喜)disappointment (失望)regret (懊悔)joy (喜悅)delight (欣喜)embarrassment (尷尬)satisfaction (滿意)relief (鬆一口氣)amazement (驚訝)等。
例句 1. To Mann's delight, an elderly lady stopped and told him her story.
(
Mann欣喜的是,一位老太太停下來跟他說她的故事。)
2. To my surprise, my elementary school teacher still remembers me after 10 years.
(令我驚喜的是,我的小學老師在十年後還記得我。)
3. To Leo's embarrassment, his ex­girlfriend falls in love with his buddy.
(
Leo感到尷尬的是,他前女友愛上他的好朋友。)
練習 1. 令球迷們失望的是,國家棒球代表隊以一分之差輸了比賽。
 To  the fans'  disappointment , the national baseball team lost the game by one point.
2. 令這名病人極度喜悅的是,他在手術後得以重見光明。
 To  the patient's great  joy , he is able to see again after the surgery.

5. much + Adj­er/more Adj
說明 副詞much可用來修飾比較級,表示「更……」。much亦可視不同程度而用farevenrathera lot等替換。
例句 1. After Mann and the old lady shared a hug, he felt much better.
(Mann
和老太太相擁之後感到好多了。)
2. The heavy rain made the rough mountain paths even more dangerous.
(豪雨讓不平的山路更危險了。)
3. With the new MRT line, traveling in the city is far more convenient.
(新的捷運路線開通後,在城市中旅行更方便了。)

說明 1. 此為副詞比較的延伸句型,用來修飾動詞片語,中文作「盡可能……,越……越好」解。
2. 本句型為原級比較的用法,因此副詞應使用原級。
例句 1. It is important to learn interview skills as early as possible. 
(盡可能早點學會面試技巧是很重要的。)
2. Please reply to my mail as soon as possible.
(請盡快回覆我的信。)
3. Daniel ran as fast as he could to catch the school bus. 
(Daniel盡可能地快跑以趕上校車。)
練習 1. 我的媽媽盡可能地公平對待我和哥哥。
My mother treats my brother and I        equally                     .

2. S1 + recommend/insist/demand/order + that + S2 + (should) V....
說明 1. 此為意志動詞的用法。表示建議、堅持、命令、要求等意思的動詞,其後所接的that子句中,助動詞should常省略,故that子句中的動詞常以原形動詞。
2. 此句型中的常見動詞有表示「建議」的recommendsuggestadvise,表示「堅持」的insist,表示「要求」的demandrequire及表示「命令」的order等。
3. that子句如需表達否定意義,則須把not加在原形動詞之前。
例句 1. Most interviewers demand that interviewees (should) introduce themselves at the beginning of an interview. 
(大部分的面試官會要求面試者在面試開始時自我介紹。)
2. The clerk recommended that I (should) buy the latest smartphone.
(店員建議我買最新款的智慧型手機。)
3. The tour guide insisted that Mark (should) get up at 5:30 am to watch the beautiful sunrise.
(導遊堅持Mark要在清晨五點半起床以觀賞美麗的日出。)
練習 1. 醫生建議Doris多喝水,並在晚上十點半前就寢。

3. whether + S + V... (+ or not) = whether or not + S + V...
說明 1. 此為whether作連結詞的用法,表示「無論……與否」之意句末的or not可以省略。whether引導的子句在句首時,需用逗號與主要子句隔開。
2. 此句型也可將or not放到whether後,句型作“whether or not + S + V..., S + V...”。
例句 1. Whether you are accepted or not, try to learn from the experience.
(無論你是否被錄取,試著從經驗中學習。)
2. Whether John's parents support him or not, he has made up his mind to go on a working holiday.
(無論他的父母親是否贊成,John已下定決心去打工渡假。)
3. Whether it rains or not, the baseball game will start on time.
(無論晴雨,棒球賽都會準時開打。)

4. ...N + who/whom/which/that....
說明 1. 此為限定用法的關係子句,又稱為形容詞子句,用來修飾先行詞 (N)
2. 先行詞為人的時候,關係代名詞whowhom分別代替主詞及受詞。先行詞為事物的時候,則用關係代名詞which。若關係代名詞為受格時可省略。that通常可用來代替限定關係子句中的whowhomwhich
3. 當先行詞有alleverysomeanynothe only和形容詞最高級the Adj­est等修飾時,關係代名詞只能用that
例句 1. Answers which display a broad knowledge of the department or company can show that you have fully prepared for the interview. (可展現出對於該部門或公司具有深入了解的答案,顯示出你為這場面試做了萬全準備。)
2. The company is looking for someone who is good at numbers.
(這間公司在尋找善於處理數字的人才。)
3. Anne is the coolest mom that I have ever known.
(Anne是我所知最酷的媽媽。)

5. It + be + recommended + that + S + (should) + V....
說明 1. 此句型中的it為虛主詞,代替被移到句末的真主詞that子句,表示「建議……」之意。當句中主詞較長時,可以虛主詞it代替。that子句中,助動詞should常省略,故子句中的動詞常以原形動詞表示。
2. recommended也可以用advisedsuggested替換。
例句 1. It is highly recommended that you (should) find a list of questions related to these topics on the Internet.
(非常建議你在網路上搜尋關於這些主題的問題列表。)
2. It is suggested that you (should) make a reservation before eating at that famous restaurant.
(建議你要去那家知名餐廳用餐前先訂位。)
3. It is strongly advised that those who are on a diet (should) keep a food diary.
(強烈建議節食的人寫下食物日記。)
