Terry Fox was a brave Canadian
who has changed the world in no small way. Terry lost his right leg at the age
of 18 because of bone cancer. While
he was in the hospital, he saw many brave children suffering
from cancer. Whenever he
was in pain, he
thought of the brave smiles on the faces of those children. Then, he had the
idea of raising money for research
into cancer.
Three years later, he got
used to running on his wooden
leg. Then, he began his “Marathon
of Hope.” Sadly, after running for 143 days and a
distance of 5,373 kilometers, he
felt a different kind of pain. The cancer had spread
to his lungs, and he
had to stop running. A year later, Terry died at the age of 22.
Although Terry could not run to the end,
his spirit has lived on. Every September in Canada , the Terry Fox Run raises millions of
dollars for cancer research. Because of it, children with bone cancer are able
to live longer now and rarely lose limbs. Thanks to Terry Fox, these children have a chance to
lead a happy and healthy life.

Today, we have been getting overweight
easily because of our busy lifestyles.
We work too hard and don’t have time or energy
to exercise. In addition, it has become common to eat fast food because it is
fast and cheap. People might ask if fast food is making us fat, what can make
us thin? The answer could be “slow
food.”
The idea of slow food began in the 1980s
when a group of Italian farmers
and chefs got
together to discuss the problem of fast food. They worried that McDonald’s or
other fastfood chains
would take over the culinary world. They also worried that traditional and healthy food would be
replaced by salty, sugary, and highfat food.
Therefore, they decided to form a group and
tried to save the world’s food culture.
People in the Slow Food group made efforts
to let others understand more about the health risks of fast food. They also
worked hard to offer more food choices and let people know more about what a
healthy diet is. Besides, they encouraged good farming and offered help to
small, family farms. Through these, they hoped to change people’s ideas about
eating.
The Slow Food group now has supporters all over the world in over 100 countries, including Taiwan . Because of their efforts,
the world has learned more about the benefit of slow food.
