John Herschel Glenn
Jr., the first American to orbit the Earth, died at the age of 95 in December 2016. Glenn developed a love of flying early on. When he was eight years old, he and his father went for
their first ride in an airplane.
In 1941,
soon after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, Glenn signed up for the Naval Aviation Cadet Program. After

, he joined the Marine Corps, flying 149 combat missions during World War

On February 20, 1962, Glenn successfully orbited the Earth three times in
