Imagine falling asleep
normally, but then having
your eyes snap open just as you’re
about
to dream. An evil-looking face floats above you, screaming into your ear while its
hands
are wrapped around your throat, choking you. Worst of all, you can’t move a single muscle in your body. All you can do is hope that you wake up. This is what life is like for Nicolas Bruno, a photographer who suffers from sleep paralysis.
Sleep paralysis
occurs just as a person is about to enter REM sleep, or the dreaming
stage. During REM sleep, our
bodies paralyze themselves so that
we don’t
act out
our
dreams. For people with sleep paralysis, though,
their
minds actually begin experiencing hallucinations.
Bruno started experiencing
sleep paralysis when he was
only 15.
He experienced
it
every
night, and it became so bad
that
he would try to stay up as
long as
possible to avoid going
to bed
and even became
depressed. Bruno eventually
found some relief for his sleep
paralysis after he started documenting his night terrors in the form of photography.
Bruno’s photos
capture the terror he experiences
every night but also mixes
it with
a kind of unique, dark comedy. Many of the people in his pictures
have their eyes covered,
are bound, and want to
escape from something,
but sometimes there are funny elements
too. Right now,
Bruno
is showing his photographs in his online gallery.

Look closely at an
illustration or an advertisement. Do you notice
any small
words
or photos concealed in the picture? Sometimes, advertisements with photos contain subliminal images. These subliminal
images can influence our brains even though we may not be
consciously aware that we’ve seen them.
Research shows that subliminal images have the ability to change our mood or actions. They may even persuade us to buy things. For instance, if the words “buy it” are concealed
somewhere in an advertisement,
there
is a higher chance that someone will purchase the promoted product. Subliminal advertising is against the law in several countries.
Nevertheless, the practice is still generally accepted. Furthermore,
it’s easy for companies to avoid
penalties; if they’re caught, they can claim that any hidden words or images
were accidental.
Subliminal images have their limitations
regardless of their influence on us. One study suggested that the method may be
used to convince thirsty people to buy a certain type of drink, but it couldn’t
actually trick people into feeling thirsty.
What’s surprising is that the word that
is most commonly used in subliminal advertising is neither “buy” nor “eat” but
“sex.” Cans of Pepsi-Cola, video game advertisements, and even a movie poster
for a Harry Potter film have all featured this word.
