The Empire State Building* is probably one of
the most famous landmarks of New York. Back in the 18th century, the
site of the building used to be a farm with a stream running across it. In the
19th century, a big hotel where famous people frequently stayed was
built on this site. In 1930, construction on the Empire State Building began.
The construction blueprints* were completed in only two weeks, and the construction
itself took place at a pace that seemed swifter than the wind: It was finished
in just 410 days. How was this possible? The project hired a total of 3,400
workers, who all turned out to be very hard-working. Thus the building was
completed much faster than expected-in less than 15 months instead of 18 months. The building officially
opened on May 1, 1931, and it was the US president who turned on the building’s
lights with the push of a button from his office in Washington, DC. The Empire
State Building is 443.2 meters high, and it was the world’s tallest building
for nearly 40 years, from 1931 to 1970. In 2010, the owners of the building
decided to spend $120 million to turn it into a more energy-efficient and
eco-friendly* structure. Even today, the Empire State Building remains one of
the most famous buildings in the world.
