用法:client 多指大宗買賣或與銀行有來往的『客戶』,而customer [`kʌstəmɚ] 則指到一般商店買東西的『顧客』。client 也指請律師打官司的『委託訴訟人』。

 

clue [klu] n. 線索,端倪,頭緒

片語:do not have a clue 一點都不知道

Do you have any clues to the robber's whereabouts? / 你有任何搶匪下落的線索嗎?*whereabouts [͵(h)wɛrə`baʊts] n. 下落行蹤

I didn't have a clue why Roger yelled at me. / 我不知道為什麼羅傑對我大叫。

用法:clue之後須與介詞toaboutas to並用。

 

devil [`dɛvḷ] n. 魔鬼

Stay away from that woman! She is a real devil!  / 離那女人遠點!她是個不折不扣的惡魔!

drip [drɪp] vt. vi. 滴下 n. 滴水聲

Television is one of the most popular inventions in the history of mankind. / 電視是人類史上最普及的發明之一。

Mankind is faced with the danger of overpopulation. = Man is faced with the danger of overpopulation. = Human beings are faced with the danger of overpopulation. / 人類正面臨人口過剩的危險。

用法:mankind man 均表『人類』,視作集合名詞,不可數,且之前不置任何冠詞(a the),與單數動詞並用。human being 亦表『人類』,卻是可數名詞,單數為 a human being,複數則為 human beings(之前不置the)。

 

medal [`mɛdḷ] n. 獎章

片語:a gold medal 金牌;a silver medal 銀牌;a bronze medal 銅牌

Officer Smith was given a medal for his brave deeds. / 史密斯警官因其英勇行徑獲頒一枚獎章。
