1  too Adj   to V Adv

→ 此句型的意思是「太……而無法……」，雖然句型中沒有not或no這類的否定字，但句型本身即帶有否定意味，表示無法做到to V這個動作。如果要表示「對某對象來說，太……而無法……」的對象時，可在不定詞前方加上for sb / sth，寫為too Adj / Adv + for sb / sth + to V。

例：John has become too ill to work.

John病得太重而無法工作。

Mark walks too fast for me to catch up.

Mark走得太快而讓我無法跟上。

2  原級比較：A + V + as Adj   as + B Adv

→ 這個句型介紹以形容詞或副詞的「原級」來做比較的用法，意思是「A和B一樣……」，句型中的B可視為比較的基準，可為名詞或子句。如果B為子句時，重複的動詞或助動詞常省略。和Unit 1句型1介紹過的比較級用法不同的是，這裡不需要變化形容詞或副詞為比較級，只要以原級出現，就可以達到相比的效果。

例：The wall is almost as tough as iron.

牆壁幾乎和鐵一樣堅硬。

The little girl walks as slowly as a turtle (does).

小女孩走得跟烏龜一樣慢。

3  be (just) about to V

→ 這個片語的意思是「差不多要做某事，即將快要做某事」，用來表示接下來的動作。片語中的just可省略，通常以be about to V的形式出現在句子裡。要特別注意的是，be about to比be going to在時間上更為緊迫，因此通常用於馬上就要做或即將發生的事情。但若句子中有tomorrow、next week等表示未來的時間副詞時，不可用be about to。

例：Karen was about to go to school when I saw her this morning.

今天早上我看到Karen時，她差不多要去上學。

The sky is dark. It is about to rain.

天色很暗。差不多要下雨了。

4  what’s more

→ 此片語的意思是「而且，再者」，是一個副詞片語，其中的what’s是what is的縮寫。這個片語的功用主要是承接語氣，銜接上文，表示後面還有相關的內容要講，再帶進深入探討的內容。

例：The party is great. What’s more, the food is free.

派對很棒。而且，食物是免費的。

I don’t want to go out because it’s raining heavily. What’s more, it’s already very late.

我不想外出，因為正在下雨。而且，已經很晚了。

5  why not

→ 此片語用來表示建議或同意，意思是「為什麼不，何不，怎麼不」。雖然片語中含有not這個否定字，但其實是表示建議後方要提到的事情，或同意後方提到的動作，並非否定掉後方的內容。

例：Why not walk to school?

何不走路上學？

Why not buy this dress?

怎麼不買這件洋裝？
