此句型的意思是「太……而無法……」,雖然句型中沒有not或no這類的否定字,但句型本身即帶有否定意味,表示無法做到to V這個動作。如果要表示「對某對象來說,太……而無法……」的對象時,可在不定詞前方加上for sb / sth,寫為too Adj / Adv + for sb / sth + to
V。
例:John has become too ill to work.
John病得太重而無法工作。
Mark walks too fast for me
to catch up.
Mark走得太快而讓我無法跟上。

這個句型介紹以形容詞或副詞的「原級」來做比較的用法,意思是「A和B一樣……」,句型中的B可視為比較的基準,可為名詞或子句。如果B為子句時,重複的動詞或助動詞常省略。和Unit 1句型1介紹過的比較級用法不同的是,這裡不需要變化形容詞或副詞為比較級,只要以原級出現,就可以達到相比的效果。
例:The wall is almost as tough as iron.
牆壁幾乎和鐵一樣堅硬。
