題
It’s easy to laugh when someone tells a funny joke or story.
However, it’s far more awkward when someone tells a joke or story that isn’t
humorous at all. Should you laugh or not? In many cultures, people give a fake
laugh in order to avoid causing embarrassment or upsetting others. This kind of
laughter is convincing enough to seem real. Scientists estimate that we learn
to produce fake laughs as children. By the time we’re adults, it has become an
automatic response to situations where not laughing would seem rude.
Laughter is an important part of human interaction. Real laughter
creates bonds between people, and it’s associated with a chemical in our brain
that produces feelings of happiness. Because of this, however, we feel the
pressure to laugh even when things aren’t funny. We even make fake laughs in
nervous, uncomfortable situations. For example, it can help us move past a
moment in which someone has said something inappropriate.
However, because fake laughter can sound so real, people can take it the wrong way. It may seem like
a person likes or approves of the inappropriate remark. In some court cases
involving sexual harassment, for instance, some people can’t stop themselves
from giving fake laughs to escape the tension of the uncomfortable subject
matter. Unfortunately, this can give the wrong impression. Because of this,
perhaps we should be more conscious of when and how we laugh. We should make
the conscious decision not to laugh if we feel that something isn’t funny.

題
As machines and computer programs get more and more advanced, they
will be able to do a number of jobs more quickly and efficiently than human
workers. In fact, it’s likely that they will replace human workers at many
jobs. Therefore, companies will be faced with the question of what to do with
these workers. Unfortunately, many people will end up losing their jobs. One
company, however, took a different approach to this problem that many other
businesses and their employees will learn from.
Malwarebytes, based in California, makes software that protects
people’s computers from viruses and hacking. It began using a computer
algorithm in its quality control department. This program could search for
errors by itself, but this meant up to 50 workers could be laid off. Rather than let this happen, Malwarebytes put these
workers in a training program where they learned
programming
and software development. As they already know the company and its products,
they became especially valuable employees and better at quality control. Now,
while the algorithm searches for errors, these workers work on finding the
causes for the errors and solutions for fixing them.
Employment experts say that as automation becomes more common,
workers will be more likely to need retraining later on in their working lives.
It’s estimated that tens of millions of workers in the US will have their jobs
threatened by automation in the next ten years. The experts say that the best
thing to do is learn some new skills that make them more valuable to employers.
Improved technology presents challenges and will bring great changes, but if
people can adapt, they should all be benefitted from it.
