Section 2---Unit 14 Food and Health
Some
Food Facts to Chew On
How
much do you know about the foods you eat? Indeed, some foods might make you wonder
each time you eat them.
Consider
Pop Rocks. If you've tried them, then you'll know the popping sensation that
they create in your mouth. This effect comes from the great pressure that Pop
Rocks are made under, which locks gas inside. When we put these candies in our
mouths, the sugar melts and the gas escapes, creating the interesting sound.
Few
people know that ketchup was once considered a medicine. In the 1830s, Dr. John
Cook Bennett from Ohio reported tomatoes’ effectiveness in treating illnesses.
Then, a salesman began selling tomato-based "medicine" with great
success. Around the same time, the first tomato ketchup was created, and it
became a hit in the West.
Some
foods aren't what they appear to be. Take Pringles, for example. They may look
like perfectly formed potato chips, but in fact, they're only 42 percent actual
potatoes. The rest of Pringles consists mainly of wheat starch and flour. For
this reason, they don't meet the definition of potato chips.
Lastly,
there's a food that most of us have eaten: McDonald's Chicken McNuggets.
Perhaps not many people know that besides chicken, these bite-size pieces
contain a high percentage of corn and sugars. They also have a host of things
not normally used in home cooking. One of these is a chemical that stops
Chicken McNuggets from producing foam during the preparation process.
As
you can see, food can contain a lot of surprises. It's always a good idea to
know exactly what you are putting inside your body. Think about the foods you
eat, and perhaps do some research on them to find their health value. Food may
never taste the same again.
