Section 2---Unit 10 Science and Technology
How to
Improve Your Memory
Did
you forget an important date during your history test again? The problem isn't
that you have a bad memory. You just need to train your brain. Here are some
tips to help improve your memory.
Association
Words
are usually easier to remember than numbers are. Therefore, the association
method, which may involve linking numbers to words, can be used to help you
memorize dates. For example, to remember "1492," the year Columbus
discovered America, think of the rhyme: "In fourteen hundred ninety-two /
Columbus sailed the ocean blue."
Images
Creating
strong images in your mind can improve your memory, too. Take “pineapple"
as an example. The object's shape makes it look like a pinecone. Also, like an
apple, it's a fruit.
Chunking
Breaking
large pieces of information into smaller ones makes them easier to remember. We
break phone numbers into groups, such as 0955- 007-111, for this reason.
Chunking is also useful for memorizing other information, such as poems and
vocabulary words.
Brain
exercises
Give
your brain a workout with brain-training activities. Crossword puzzles, trivia
games, and Sudoku can keep your mind sharp.
Physical
exercise
Regular
exercise, like walking and running, helps increase the amount of oxygen in your
brain and improve brain function. Keeping fit also reduces stress, which can
affect your focus and your memory.
Eating
right
Eating
foods that protect your brain cells naturally enhances memory. These foods
include berries, broccoli, carrots, and green tea. In addition, no vitamin
pills can match the natural omega-3 fatty acids found in Eat right walnuts and
some fishes.
Memories
are made in your brain, so the more you take care of it the more you will
remember. Forget the excuse that you have a bad memory. Take the right steps
and unlock the power of your mind.
