A US government agency had to give out a surprising warning using its Twitter account in April 2018. “Please don’t try!” said the US Geological Survey (USGS)    16    a question asking if it would be safe to roast marshmallows over a volcano vent.
The reason for this warning relates to the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii. The volcano became much more active than usual in April 2018. Rivers of hot lava flowed down its slopes, destroying some people’s homes and forcing many others to    17   . The USGS is the organization responsible for issuing volcano     18     to the people under threat of harm. A curious man asked on Twitter if people could roast things with the heat from the lava flowing out of the volcano. He wondered if it would be safe     19     he used a long enough stick. Though the USGS recognized that he was joking, it still advised against it. Volcanos produce poisonous gas;    20     , anything roasted over lava wouldn’t be safe to eat.

Extreme weather killed at least 150 people in northern India during the spring of 2018. Buildings    21    due to heavy rain and powerful winds. Lightning strikes also killed dozens during storms that authorities said were among the most severe to ever hit the country.
The first in the chain of disasters was     22     heavy dust storms followed by pounding rains at the beginning of May. The     23     of these forces badly damaged structures and knocked down trees. What’s more, a number of people were killed when their homes fell on top of them. Some said they weren’t warned of the storms in advance,    24    local police insisting that they’d warned people in this area. Later in the month, torrential rain with thunder and lightning hit another part of India, again destroying many trees and buildings.
Continued high temperatures—as hot as 47°C in some areas—were predicted to prolong the extreme weather. While the strength of these storms might be surprising, deadly weather is not      25    of in that region of the world. In fact, lightning kills thousands of people in India every year.

The Color of the Year for 2018 is purple. More     26    , it’s Ultra Violet. This isn’t the invisible kind of light you might know from physics class, but a specific shade of purple selected by the Pantone Color Institute. The institute says that Ultra Violet represents doing things your own way and creating brilliant art,     27     it “suggests the mysteries of the cosmos.” These unique associations are what earned this shade of purple the title of Color of the Year.
Pantone, Inc., the parent organization of the Color Institute, invents and licenses systems for naming colors. The color of the year provides directions for the design world. However, each color of the year isn’t just about     28     but also says something about what people need in today’s world.
Pantone, Inc.’s systems     29     each individual color a number. Ultra Violet’s identification number, for example, is Pantone 18-3838. Over the years, purple has enjoyed a respected status among colors, being seen as     30     . This was because in the past, purple dye was very rare, and only royalty could afford to buy and wear purple clothing.
