An experiment that began in one Scottish elementary school has
spread to many others. Its result once again 16
a fact we’ve known for a long
time: even a little regular exercise can greatly improve our health. The “Daily
Mile” program challenges students to run at least one mile every day, and it’s
showing how children 17 this
practice.
Elaine Wylie, the head teacher at St. Ninians School in Scotland,
was anxious about the health of her students. She decided to make 18
at least one mile a part of the
school day to supplement regular physical education classes. Soon, students’
health and fitness had 19 improved.
They were able to run longer and farther. A study has shown that the fitter
children are when they’re young, 20
they will be to develop
cardiovascular problems in later life. A mile a day may not be much, but it
makes a major difference.

A Hong Kong democracy supporter and prominent figure in the city’s
Umbrella Movement has been sentenced to six years in prison. Edward Leung
received the sentence in June 2018 after being accused of causing violent 21
with police during 2016’s
protests. The protests began when Hong Kong police attempted to crack down on
unlicensed street vendors selling Chinese New Year snacks.
Many pro-democracy politicians saw Leung’s sentence as too 22
and claimed it might be a
result of his radical political opinions. Nathan Law, a local politician, said
that even those who were convicted after Hong Kong’s fatal 1967 riots had
received shorter sentences than Leung’s.
Hong Kong’s judicial system is nominally independent from 23
of China. However, this event
has sparked worries that Chinese influence is 24
the city’s courtrooms. Anthea
Pang, the judge in Leung’s case, maintained that the sentence wasn’t based on
his political stance but the extent to which he disturbed public order and
peace. Despite the judge’s explanation, many politicians said that this harsh

When we get wet, we use a towel to dry ourselves. Your pet dog, 26
, might be a bit messier about this process. It doesn’t need a
towel; instead, all it needs to do is shake its body. We’ve understood for a
long time that dogs, like many other animals, shake themselves vigorously to
dry off. However, 27 people know the facts about this common
instinct and the underlying reasons why animals keep themselves dry.
Using high-speed videography, a research team in Georgia, US,
collected information about how dogs and other animals shake themselves when
wet. They found that shaking is an efficient way for animals to
28 70% of the water on their fur. Without this shaking
mechanism, animals would need to use a large part of their energy every day
just to 29 dry. Staying dry is essential to animals; in
fact, it can save their lives. Being wet makes animals heavier, which makes
30
hard
to escape from danger. Therefore, next time your dog splashes water on you when
shaking its body, don’t command it to stop; it’s Mother Nature’s way to keep it
alive.
