Over the past decades, the AIDS virus has deeply troubled the world. Many biologists believe that the virus came from monkeys, infecting the first humans sometime during the first half of the 20th century. ___1.___ However, a new study might provide the answer to this question.

Scientists in this study claim that the spread of the virus is likely to have started from a bloodsucking insect called the stable fly. It scraped the skin of the victim and sucked un some blood. V. 閱讀測驗

As toddlers begin to explore the world, most Asian parents seldom let them get near anything dangerous. They take many things away, such as scissors and knives because they worry that their children might hurt themselves. In contrast, some Western parents allow their children to try their hand at everything freely. They view bumps and cuts as part of the process of growing up. A famous British survival expert, Bear Grylls, urges that instead of teaching kids to avoid anything dangerous, we should teach them how to play with it safely. He even suggests that some basic survival skills like making a fire and using a penknife should be included in the lessons at school.

Grylls' idea is supported by an expert on child health, Jan Murray, who points out that parents should not over-protect their kids; on the contrary, they should allow them to develop independence and various skills. She says that trial and error is the main way for children to learn, and by taking risks, they understand the outcomes of their behavior. But most parents take away children's freedom to cross the road or walk to school alone. It's a pity that parents' own concept or cultural expectations stop their children from taking adventures.

"An adventure means a bold journey or action with uncertain outcomes. But by taking this adventurous ride, we gain great experiences," explains Phil Harrison from Scouts Australia. "So, stop hesitating, parents. Take your kids to cook on an open fire, sleep under the stars, climb a tree or go canoeing. In this way, they are sure to have a wonderful childhood."

VI. 閱讀測驗

As all the baseball players fixed their eyes on the pitcher, they looked completely focused. They all hoped to stand out in this tryout and be chosen to play in the World Cup. Sadly, no matter how well they performed, they could hardly receive any attention from the media simply because they were women baseball players. Women playing baseball are usually discriminated against. General people believe what girls or women should play is softball, which is considered safer and better for ladies. A.G. Spalding, the founder of a famous sports goods company, who made baseball popular, even announced in 1911 that baseball should be all-male, for women were not strong enough to play the game.

Yet, the origin of women baseball can be traced back to the 1830s, when women played in baseball clubs, on amateur teams and at schools. In 1931, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig were stricken out by a 17-year-old girl, Jackie Mitchell in a warmup match. Many female baseball players had great performance, such as Mamie "Peanut" Johnson, who pitched among male players for a couple of seasons. Women's teams formed and attracted greater attention during World War II. However, in 1952, Major League Baseball stopped women from signing contracts with baseball teams. They said that women's bones were weaker than men's and that female baseball players ran a higher risk of getting breast cancer because their chests often got hit and neither of them was convincing. Female baseball players continue to be neglected, which is nothing but a result of sexism.

(  ) 1. What is this passage mainly about?

(A) The historical development of female baseball.

(B) Great women baseball players in Major League Baseball.

(C) How women master baseball skills to become professional players.

(D) The unfair attitude people take toward female baseball players.

(  ) 4. Which of the following statements is true?

(B) Mamie "Peanut" Johnson was stopped from playing in any baseball game after 1952.

VII. 混合題型

There is no doubt that the lion, often called "the king of the jungle," is one of the most powerful animals in the world. Far from what the name "jungle" suggests, however, most lions live on the grasslands on the plains of East Africa. The only lions that can be found to live in a jungle habitat are those in the Gir Forest National Park in western India.

In Africa, lions use the long grass on the plain to hide themselves in when they are hunting their prey, which includes other large animals like zebras, giraffes, buffalos and wildebeests. They usually hunt for food at night. In group with around 10-15 members, it is the females that are responsible for up to ninety percent of the hunting. A male lion typically protects the pride and looks after its territory. Lions are amazing hunters. They can run at up to 80 kilometers per hour over short distances. They have to do a lot of hunting, as a female lion needs 5 kg of meat a day, and a male lion needs at least 7 kg. An adult male lion can make very loud sound. Its roar can be heard even 8 kilometers away. Both males and females live for an average of 12 years in the wild. Few live longer than 16 years. In zoos, they can live around 25 years.
