 Section 2---Unit 48 Art

Making Art Out of Cardboard

When it comes to creating art, Taiwanese artist Kai-Xiang Xhong leaves nothing to waste. This is because Xhong produces beautiful works of art using materials, like cardboard, that usually end up in the trash.

With cardboard and simple tools, Xhong has crafted beetles, birds, and dinosaurs. Looking at the details of these models, one understands just how much patience and dedication went into them. In fact, before he begins creating his pieces, Xhong carefully studies the animals' bodies. Then, the work begins. According to Xhong, there's no fixed procedure for making these sculptures, which is what makes the process fun.

Xhong has also crafted models of fantasy figures, such as his impressive cardboard Chinese dragon, which took a year to make. However, movie monsters and figures are his favorite subjects. He once made a life-size cardboard Iron Man suit, which caught the attention of the Stan Winston School of Character Arts. The school ended up doing an interview with Xhong and posted images of the suit on its website.

Xhong's passion for art began at an early age. He started with painting and origami, and developed an interest in animals. His first cardboard artwork was born sometime during high school. On one of his frequent visits to a pet-insect store, he came across some discarded cardboard boxes and made a praying mantis with this material. From then on, the shop owner and friends would challenge him to make various other animal models.

Regarding his future goals, Xhong says he wants to hold a personal exhibition and travel abroad to gain new artistic inspiration. When We asked him what suggestions he'd give to aspiring young artists, he said that it's important to be honest with yourself and to know what one's true passions are.
