Healthcare in Taiwan
Over the past twenty years, healthcare in
Taiwan has improved. In addition to new health insurance, hospitals have better
equipment and doctors receive better training too. Because of these
improvements, people live longer, there are fewer problems with childbirth and
doctors in Taiwan are starting to contribute to great advances in medicine.
Also, the government is making people more aware of health risks from smoking
and eating unhealthy food. The government now feels ready to join the World
Health Organization (WHO). As a member, there will be more resources for
doctors and better information about healthcare. Healthcare has never been as
good as it is now and it will only continue to get better.

The
Smart Card
At the end of 2003, people living in Taiwan
were given a new electronic health card, better known as the "Smart Card"
or "IC Card". In contrast to the old card, the new card has a
computer chip that can do many things. For example, it can hold all kinds of
patient information such as past medical records, types of treatment received,
past visits and so on. Therefore, trips to the hospital should be much easier
and quicker. Moreover, the card should reduce the number of mistakes that
